In an increasingly interconnected world, student exchange programs serve as powerful bridges that connect cultures, fostering mutual understanding and global friendships. By stepping beyond their comfort zones, students gain firsthand experience of different traditions, perspectives, and ways of life. These exchanges not only enrich their academic and personal growth but also cultivate a sense of respect and appreciation for cultural diversity. Through shared experiences, they learn that despite differences in language and heritage, human connections transcend borders.
A journey of discovery and friendship awaits as International Recreation, Knowledge and Adventure Nine (REKA9TH) prepares to embark on its inaugural student exchange program. Organized by Kolej Kediaman Tun Syed Zahiruddin, Universiti Malaya, this promising initiative will bring together 28 university students from Universiti Malaya and around 20 participants from Yunnan University, China, in a week-long cultural and recreational exchange from 1 to 6 August 2025.
“This program is more than just an exchange; it is an opportunity for students to immerse themselves in a new culture while embracing the spirit of sports and artistic expression,” said How Yu Qian, a final-year English student from the Faculty of Languages and Linguistics and director of this project. “We want students to experience firsthand how recreation, knowledge, and adventure can create meaningful connections beyond borders.”
The heart of REKA9TH lies in its diverse lineup of activities that emphasize both sports and cultural engagement. From traditional games workshops featuring congkak and batu seremban to friendly sports matches, students will engage in an exciting blend of play and learning. Meanwhile, cultural arts workshops, including batik-making and calligraphy, will encourage participants to appreciate different forms of artistic expression. A cultural night will further highlight the richness of both Malaysian and Chinese traditions through traditional costume showcases and performances, culminating in a hiking excursion to explore Yunnan’s stunning landscapes.
According to Dr. Saaidal Razalli Azzuhri, a Fellow of Kolej Kediaman Tun Syed Zahiruddin and the project’s advisor, REKA9TH symbolizes a revival of the exchange of ideas, much like the connections forged along the historic Silk Road. “Our goal is to rekindle the spirit of exchange that once thrived between different civilizations. We hope this program will foster long-lasting friendships and provide students with a broader perspective on cultural diversity and collaboration.”

Beyond cultural enrichment, the program champions a holistic lifestyle, balancing both physical and mental well-being. With its tagline “REKAOurLives”, it encourages participants to design their own vibrant and fulfilling lives through recreation and the arts. By integrating sports and cultural activities, students will not only develop their interpersonal and leadership skills but also learn to navigate different cultural landscapes with confidence.
“We want to inspire students to lead healthier and more connected lives,” added Yu Qian. “By embracing both physical activities and creative pursuits, we believe participants will walk away from this program with newfound perspectives on what it means to lead a balanced, meaningful life.”
As the anticipation builds for REKA9TH, the organizing team is eager to create an experience that will leave a lasting impact on all involved. With China as the chosen destination this year, the exchange program sets the foundation for further ASEAN+3 collaborations, strengthening ties between students from different backgrounds.
With just a few months until departure, students from both universities are looking forward to forging new friendships, exchanging knowledge, and exploring the beauty of Yunnan, China. As REKA9TH takes its first step, it carries with it the promise of adventure, learning, and a celebration of cultural unity through the power of recreation.
